Badminton: Peng Soon and Yee See restore some confidence

PETALING JAYA: After two first-round exits, mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Cheah Yee See restored their confidence a little after checking into the second round of the Macau Open.

The world No. 31 were flying high in September after reaching the semi-finals of the Korean Open. It was their first semi-final appearance in a Superseries event.

But their confidence was jolted by the first-round defeats at the Dutch Open and Denmark Open last month.

The eighth-seeded Peng Soon-Yee See whipped Indonesia’s Yantoni Edy Saputra-Marsheilla Gischa Islami 21-13, 21-19 in the first round at the Tap Seac Multisport Arena yesterday and will take on the Malaysia-Indonesia combination of Mohd Arif Abdul Latif-Rusydina Antardayu for a place in the quarter-finals.

“We were doing well in September but lost a bit of confidence after two first-round defeats in Europe last month,” admitted Peng Soon.

“It was important for us to get a good win here. I’m happy with the way we played today.

“Tomorrow will be our first time meeting Arif-Rusydina. It will be tough but we’ll do our best.”

Malaysia’s other mixed doubles pair of Hoo Pang Ron-Peck Yen Wei also made it through after beating Taiwan’s Yang Po-hsuan-Wen Hao-yun 21-15, 21-18.

They will meet sixth seeds Seo Seung-jae-Kim Ha-na of South Korea in the second round.

In men’s singles, two-time national champion Lim Chi Wing and former national shuttler Chong Wei Feng both won their second-round matches.

Chi Wing struggled before beating Japan’s Hashiru Shimono 21-16, 14-21, 21-11 and will meet either compatriot Zulfadli Zulkiffli or England’s Wong Hin Shun in the third round.

Wei Feng eased past Indonesia’s Panji Ahmad Maulana 21-18, 21-14 to set up a third-round meeting with Japan’s Koki Watanabe.
